All concrete shrinks as it cures. A good driveway controls where that cracking happens, and a good base stops the slab from moving after.
The base
The old surface comes out, the ground is dug to depth, and the base is compacted in layers. Skipping this is the number one reason driveways sink.
Control joints
Joints cut at the right spacing give the slab a place to crack in a straight, hidden line instead of across the middle.
Drainage
The driveway should slope away from the garage and house. Water sitting on or under the slab is what freeze-thaw feeds on.
